FIKA, a culture from Sweden that reminds people to “take a break” from work
‘Fika’ is a break culture from Sweden that Swedish people practice as part of their daily routine. It involves taking a short break from work for about 10–15 minutes to drink coffee, have snacks, and talk with people around you. In recent years, many organizations worldwide have adopted Fika and found that it significantly improves employees’ emotional well-being and reduces work-related stress.
Recently, many people have been working from home, and it is widely known that working at home can increase stress and negatively affect mental health. Today, REAL ASSET would like to introduce the benefits of Fika. As we continue to promote the ‘Ever Smile’ concept, we encourage everyone to apply Fika to their daily lives and prioritize a balance between work and rest to build strong and positive mental health. We will get through this work-from-home period together.

Taking a break from work, sipping coffee, and talking with others can help relieve stress and anxiety. The core of Fika is not just drinking coffee or eating snacks, but ‘socializing.’ Interacting with others helps stimulate hormones that reduce anxiety and increase confidence, making it easier to manage stress. Additionally, conversations allow you to share problems and express feelings, which can help you feel better.

Research has found that working continuously without breaks can block creativity, leading to mental fatigue and lack of ideas. This is why people often come up with great ideas while doing other activities, such as showering or jogging. Experts suggest that taking breaks is an effective way to overcome creative blocks. Stepping away from the screen refreshes your mind, allowing you to return to work with better efficiency and creativity.

Sitting for long periods without movement can negatively impact physical health. It may start with minor discomfort but can develop into office syndrome for some people. This leads to medical costs, time loss, and ongoing discomfort. Therefore, it is important to take breaks, stretch, walk around, make coffee, or grab a snack. Even small movements can help reduce the risk of such conditions. No matter how busy work is, taking short breaks is always worthwhile.
